Journal Quartile Check

The Central Library guides faculty members, researchers, and students in understanding the quality and ranking of journals prior to manuscript submission. One of the important indicators of journal quality is the Journal Quartile Ranking (Q1–Q4).

What is a Journal Quartile?

Journal quartiles indicate the relative ranking of journals within a specific subject category:
• Q1 – Top 25% journals in the subject area
• Q2 – Journals ranked between 25% – 50%
• Q3 – Journals ranked between 50% – 75%
• Q4 – Journals ranked in the bottom 25%
Note: Quartile rankings are updated annually and may vary across different subject categories.

SCImago Journal Rank

SCImago Journal & Country Rank (SJR) is a public portal that ranks scientific journals and countries using citation data from the Scopus database. It measures academic prestige by weighting citations based on the importance of the citing journals, operating much like Google’s PageRank algorithm.

Steps:
1. Visit SCImago Journal & Country Rank
2. Search using the Journal Title or ISSN
3. Open the journal profile
4. Check the Quartile Ranking under the “Quartiles” section

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) – Web of Science

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is an annual, publisher-neutral database by Clarivate integrated with the Web of Science. It provides systematic, statistical data—most notably the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) and Journal Citation Indicator (JCI)—to evaluate and compare academic journals across science, social sciences, arts, and humanities

Steps:
◉ 1. Access Journal Citation Reports (JCR) through institutional subscription
◉ 2. Search the journal using the Title or ISSN
◉ 3. View the Quartile information in the journal profile

Scopus Sources

Scopus: A comprehensive abstract and citation database for impact makers
Find relevant research, identify top experts and gain strategic insights with Scopus metrics and analytical tools

Steps:
◉ 1. Visit Scopus Sources
◉ 2. Search using the Journal Title or ISSN
◉ 3. Verify the indexing status and quartile details

Important Points to Remember

1) Quartile rankings are subject-specific

2) Rankings are updated annually
